The Shaky Harlots are a ragtag ensemble pieced together with musicians from across the country but currently working out of Ashland, Oregon. When I first put on their new single, “Third Wheel” I heard the driving bass and drums and for a second it reminded me of early Arcade Fire. But once the vocalist comes in it changes the entire mood of the track; shifting what I thought would be an ode to mid-aughts indie into an ode to late 90s alternative. The vocals remind me of Save Ferris—Remember Save Ferris, the little ska band that could who covered “Come on, Eileen”?—Well, The Shaky Harlots certainly are not a ska band but their music has a similar attitude. “Third Wheel” is a fun, unpretentious, upbeat rocker that’s sure to get your foot tapping. In fact, despite the lack of horns, you might even start skanking.
