Musicians Writing About Music
My Little Underground, named after a Jesus and Mary Chain song, is a music review blog written exclusively by musicians. Our goal is to focus on the music. Too many reviewers analyze lyrics or get distracted with biographic details that don't really mean anything.
Our goal is to analyze albums, not just as fans, but as people who have gone through the process of writing and recording an album. We plan on talking about tone, structure, production, and gear, among other elements we feel are important to the writing and recording process.
...This was my big idea several years ago. It didn't go over all that well. Musicians might be willing to get on stage and perform, but they're very shy about sharing their opinions in the form of a written review. Also, I guess even I got sick of the rule to never speak about lyrics. I even had some classmates in grad school convince me to let them write essays focusing on lyrics (you'll find them tucked away in the "Essays" section). Now, four years after the last write-up, I'm getting back into it and I'm not even going to pretend others want a platform to talk about music. It'll just be me. I'll write a few a month. And I'd like to focus on DIY bands, particularly in my area (Philadelphia/South Jersey).
If you have some tunes recently released, send them my way and if I can, I'll write something up about them.
