Los Angeles, self-described “quasi-pop” project RVBY MY DEAR recently released their dreamy new single, “Black Moon.” As the track opens, we hear a somber and solitary piano with just enough reverb to sound as if it were being played to an empty venue. Soft vocals reminiscent of Earlimart’s “Happy Alone” (an obscure little gem I don’t expect anyone to recognize, which is why I’m linking it) gradually pull us deeper into the song’s atmosphere. And though a band eventually comes in to support the piano, “Black Moon” doesn’t erupt or explode, nor does it gradually ascend to its next level. Instead, the track blooms like a time-lapsed tulip, unfolding with massive, though never overwhelming, synths and percussion, creating an entire starscape out of sound. The track wraps itself around the listener and envelops them with a cascading array of timbres and textures, while leaving plenty of space to breath.
Now, according to spellcheck, “starscape” is not a word. But I’m happy to coin it if it means even partially describing the grandeur of RVBY MY DEAR’s sound. Support her via Bandcamp and watch the video below:
