Mount Mourn - "I Know How It Feels"

Hailing from North Carolina, Mount Mourn has been producing music for around thirty years now and at a prolific rate. New single, “I Know How it Feels” has already been usurped from the latest slot on Mount Mourn’s Bandcamp three times since the track’s release on August 15. The individual behind Mount Mourn, Ted Jackins, describes the project as such, “Sometimes it's guitar soundscapes, sometimes lo-fi indie folk confessionals, sometimes noise, etc. As with all of my art I seek to explore the world through the cracked POV of bipolar disorder and this is how I do it.”

The title of the song of course begs the question, what is “it”? Terror, alienation, grief, the sonic onslaught of the track could conjure any of these and more. The swirling dissonances and buzzing distortion crawl into one’s ear not as a worm but as a wasp furiously searching for something beyond. A Flipper-esque riff attempts to anchor the churning chaos while Jackins recites lyrics as fraught with pain as the music itself, their vocals muffled behind a veil of noise like a screened confession, “I don't mean to fall apart here/the last thing I want is to make a big scene … When I shut my eyes to sleep,/Such twisted things my head feeds me.”

By the end of this two and a half minute deluge of noise we find our narrator, “strapped to the bow” of a “ship lost at sea.” Though this odyssey is purely internal, “There's a storm raging inside me.” An Odysseus of the mind and soul, wandering lost inside something one can never escape, seeking a different sense of home.
