Green Day—Father of All Motherfuckers

---Ada Wofford

----Released 7 February 2020 on Reprise Records

Obviously, this album blows but it’s far worse than I anticipated and so, I’m going to put as much effort into this review as Green Day put into making this album. Below is a transcription of the notes I took while listening.

"Father of All Motherfuckers"

Rip off (this is referencing the write up I did when this was released as a single. The drum beat is a rip off of the beat from “Fire” by The Jimi Hendrix Experience).

"Fire, Ready, Aim"

Some cheesy handclaps. Trebly, radio, pop-rock. Vocals are oddly low in the mix. Posturing as “rock n’ roll”—“loud and crazy!” At least it’s short.

"Oh, Yeah"

Blues riff. Stomp and Clap. Not a blues chorus—Sounds like a children’s song. Stomp hook like “We Will Rock You.” The most jarring, weird, and inconsistent song I’ve ever heard.

"Meet Me On the Roof"

Riff sounds like generic commercial riff. Stupid, generic, soulless. Anyone could write this and a few people probably already have. Awful Billy Joel break.

"I Was a Teenage Teenager"

Actually kind of catchy but stupid production. Stupid synth.

"Stab You In the Heart"

Some perverted take on Elvis/Chuck Berry. Cheesy handclaps. “Achy, Breaky, Heart.”

"Sugar Youth"

Cool bass riff. Almost an Interpol sound during the 1st verse. 2nd verse is horrifying.

"Junkies on a High"

Almost reggaetón bass line. Stupid samples. AMC stomp-blues chorus.

"Take the Money and Crawl"

Old timey riff and static, goes into generic rock. Lead vocals follow lead guitar riffs. Poor production but not that bad of a song.

"Graffitia"

Oddly catchy intro. 70s power-pop. Verses sounds like “Rudie Can’t Fail” by The Clash. Pretty catchy, hooky Beach Boys cut.

There ya go. This album sounds thrown together. You can tell they’re conscious of the choices they’re making but it’s like, this whole album is an example of what happens when you’re in your 40s and writing rock songs is your 9-5. It’s stiff, boring, derivative, and disgustingly professional. I sort of enjoyed the lead single, "Father of All..." when it first came out but I think I was just in shock that it was Green Day. If you wanna toss your lunch, or just hear Green Day sound nothing like the Green Day you're used to, listen to "Father of All..." below:
