Hailing from Medford, Oregon, Death Plant are not quite what you'd expect based on the name. When I came across the three-piece, I assumed they were yet another metal band, which their website attempts to preemptively dissuade you from believing. The truth is, Death Plant are difficult to categorize. This is the band's first release since their record The Storm dropped earlier this year in March. It's an appropriate time of year to release a track like "Why?" which boasts an eerie ska-like vibe, reminding one of The Specials; but only for a moment. Once the vocals kick in, you realize this is something much different. An oom-pa bass and upstroke guitar lock in with the dance-groove drums while sinister vocals slither in and out of the changes. These meandering verses are punctuated by a sudden tempo change that blasts into a bombastic chorus, which is sure to get stuck in your noggin. It's a fun and unique track that's hard to pin down.
