Dear Forbidden--Smile Dropper

---Ada Wofford

Dear Forbidden are a bit of an enigma. They’re simultaneously catchy and fun yet deadly serious. Their promotional photos are delightfully misrepresentative of their sound and they are one of the few bands that keep their musicianship in check—letting loose when appropriate and holding back when the song calls for it.

Their latest single, “Smile Dropper” is no exception. A soft, hypnotic guitar riff lures us in—the rhythm as gentle and unassuming as a clock in the background. The thud-thud heartbeat of drums punctuates each line until the song explodes into a wall of fuzz. Heavy, huge, Pinkerton-esque power chords completely overwhelm the space created by the sparse verses and in the best way possible. This back-and-forth teasing continues while the rhythm sections vary-up their parts, adding texture and melody; the song growing like vines upon a wall before disappearing into the sky.

So yeah, it’s great. Listen to it below and purchase here via Bandcamp.
